Jessica Dombrosky's Triple Treat Chews

1 3/4 c. flour
1 1/2 c. light brown sugar
1 tbsp. grated orange rind
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. (1 stick) butter)
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate bits
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, orange rind and 1/4 tsp. salt in large bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender until crumbly. Press in bottom of ungreased 13x9x2 inch baking pan. Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees) for 10 minutes (until firm).

Sprinkle chocolate bits over layer. Let stand 2 minutes until chocolate softens. Spread evenly over pastry.

Beat eggs until thick, stir in remaining 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 tsp. salt, baking powder, vanilla and walnuts. Spread over chocolate and bake 20 minutes longer until top is firm and golden. Cool in pan. Cut in 1 inch squares. Top with walnut half held in place by confectionery sugar icing.
