"Would you like tea instead? I see you have camomile." Carl's voice was as disarming as it was inviting, and Maude suddenly hated him for it, angrily wiping the tears from her eyes. She grabbed her robe and strode into the alcove to find her cigarettes and to look out onto the japanese stone garten below. The view had always filled her with a sense of peace throughout her pampered childhood, yet it gave her no such solace today.
The sound of a key turrning the front door lock broke her chain of thought. "Melanie's timing is as good as ever", she thought, turning back into the room, intending to quietly send her half-sister out for a few more hours. Melanie was already inside, though. "Maude, the committee, they... BEHIND YOU!!"
Maude barely had time to dive for cover as two assailants came crashing through the same window she'd just stepped away from, having rapelled down from the roof onto the balcony. The one on the left had already unslung his firearm before even hitting the ground, drawing a bead on Melanie, who'd drawn her gun as well. An angry eruption of hot lead filled the room.
