How long have you been running? Since 1967
What made you decide to begin running? In 1965 I lost part of my right foot in an accident.
I had major problems learning to walk again. I came to the realization if I kept in motion by running
I could move around better than trying to walk.
Did you run competitively in high school? Junior High School Cross Country Did you run competitively in college? No track program. I did rediscover these things called Road Races. While in College in 1980, I was in a near fatal car accident causing knee, arm , shoulder and other damage. It took 20 more years of running thru the pain to withstand a crack at 26.2 miles and realize the dream.
When / why did you join SRR? Over the years some of you kind souls have helped me out in the far
desolate corners of New England Roads and as far away as Miami. I am also with North Shore, in Beverly, and my Disabilities Club is called the Achilles Track Club in New York City. I do
The NYC Marathon with my Achilles people every year (3rd straight NOV 5, 2006).
Total number races: over 1000, this includes the kid's races in late 1960's, early 1970's, and the free races.
My only win was 1st place overall in a YMCA race in Beverly in 1973. I still have the ribbon.
I finished every single race so far , an Iron Will to survive always drags me to the finish.
Favorite race (and why): The Boston Marathon, It's the Holy Grail of running. In 1965 after my accident my father told me I would one day run in the Boston Marathon.. In 2003 after qualifying in a new division called Mobility Impaired I finished my 1st Boston.
I'm at 4 straight and qualified for 2007. 4 top 4 finishes in the MI Division which is in the middle of Boston Marathon Race Book next to Wheelchair Division. After 2004 Boston I was on front page of Local paper Beverly Citizen. In 2006 the day of The Boston Marathon I was on cover of the Sports Section of the Salem News. My father was my best friend and he died in 1968. Every year now when I hit the top of the hill, his presence is felt the last 6.2 miles.
I was at this level in 1980 and it was taken away from me for over 20 years..It's just a blast to be alive and able to do this again, and I'm winning trophies & medals.
Favorite race distance: There is only one distance 26.2 miles.
Favorite runner: Bill Rodgers the nicest guy out there, thanks for the hang time and help. Dan Peterson, who died in 2006 one month before Boston #25. Eaten alive by cancer. He managed to finish the 2005 Boston Marathon. Also Louise Rossetti the movie star.
Favorite running shoe: New Balance 830 7b discontinued. The only shoe that fit perfect. I still have 2 pair with 1600+ miles I still use to break out of a slump
Average miles per week: 36-62
Most MPW Ever: 82
Best running memory: 2002 Cape Anne 25k it rained for most of it, but I do pool running in track shoes so it feels normal to me. 4 days previous I broke my 5 mile PR. I ran the 1st 5 miles at that pace, then slowed over the next 5 miles, at 12 I was searching for the Gatorade oasis, by 13, I was at 5 mile race pace again and on my way to my fastest distance time ever.
Worst running memory: 2003 Maine Marathon -- This was the smartest, fastest marathon I have ever ran. At mile 25.5 I had a 25 minute PR and was on cruise control, when the hamstring goes so goes the PR. 20 minutes to do last 7 tnths of a mile. Some how I broke the old PR by 4 minutes.
