SRR Weekend Long Runs

Thanks to Bradley Harris for hosting a huge crew for a January 2019 long run!

Long runs are the staple of any running plan. We run long a lot and hope you’ll join us! At SRR we have two main ways of connecting people for long runs:

  1. Self-organized long runs among runners of similar paces

  2. Club organized long runs

Additionally, we want to help you figure out where to run! To help with that, we’ve started a “Long Run Library” of some reliable favorite routes to choose from.

Self-organized run groups

The No Expectations pace group meets up Sunday at 10:00am at the Fresh Pond Ranger Station for loops of the pond. No expectations of pace or distance. The LAST Sunday of every month will be a different location. We will always ensure the run is at a location that is easily accessible. More information on the No Expectations page or contact Urvi for more information.

11 minute group (~11 min/mile)
Abby Strauss has been organizing long runs at a roughly 11 minute/mile pace. We’d love to grow this group and get more participants! Please reach out to Abby or watch the SRR email list for run announcements.

10 minute group (~10 min/mile)
Our 10 min/mile group is starting up and we’d love to have you come join. Contact Jose Ramirez for details and come join when you can!

9 minute group (~9 min/mile)
Our 9ish Long Run Group typically meets up on Saturday mornings in Somerville to run anywhere from 8-22 miles depending on where members are in their training cycles. Group paces range from 8:30-9:15 with members aiming to run around a 3:30-4:00 hour Marathon, 1:40-2:00 hour Half Marathon, or just get out there and run with a group. Planning emails typically go out on Wednesdays. Come join us!  Get in touch with Amanda Kuczmiec if you’re interested in joining one of these runs.

Goldilocks Long Run Group (~8:00 to ~8:30 min/mile pace)
Our newest pace group! If the 9-minute pace group is a little bit too relaxed for you and the 3-hour marathon group is running a tad faster than you’d like, the Goldilocks group will be just right. Contact Jason Lachapelle if you’re interested in joining this pace group’s email list.

3 hour marathon group (~7-8 min/mile)
A group of 3 hour marathoners (or 3:15, or 3:20) who typically do Saturday long runs at 7:45 to 8 min/mile leaving from Kenney Park in Davis Square. Runs generally start out at around 8 minute pace and sometimes speed up a little as people warm up. The group generally waits at turns or major intersections to regroup. Some runners may incorporate faster miles, but there’s almost always a group just out for steady miles. Planning emails usually go out on Thursdays.

Sub-7 group (7 min/mile or faster)
Long runs typically start out around 7 min/mile and get faster from there. The runs aren’t necessarily competitive, but this is generally a “keep up or get dropped” group. In fact, most of the group probably has been dropped at some point, and there’s no shame in that. Some runners will incorporate marathon or tempo pace efforts in some runs. Weekend runs are typically organized by email on Wednesday or Thursday.

Your group here…
Want to add a women’s only group? Or maybe a group that plans runs based on donut shop locations? We’re always happy to have more pace groups and more options. Contact Doug Lipinski to add your group here or get help with starting a new one.

Club-organized long runs

Long runs are awesome and are even better in good company. The SRR Calendar offers a birds-eye view of upcoming hosted long runs, SRR Grand Prix races, and other events that you can expect to be well attended by club members. Hosted long run details will be shared by the host via email to the SRR Google Group and on the SRR Facebook group.

Host a scheduled long run!

Offer your home or designate a central location as a base for a Saturday (or Sunday) morning run and host to the extent that you would like! Any form of hosting is a gift even if it’s just a place to use the bathroom and change into dry clothes. Hosts will often open their homes for food and drinks post-run, but this is not required. If you do open your home for post-run libations, asking people to BYOB and food to share is the way to go.

What do I need to do as a host?

  1. Notify our long run coordinator, Amanda Kuczmiec, to coordinate details

  2. Email details to the SRR Google group (somerville-road-runners@googlegroups.com) and post to the SRR Facebook group.

    Include:

  • Date/Time/Address/Parking Information

  • Link to route or routes offered (participants can adapt as they see fit)

  • Any addition details about pre/post run

  • Optional – use a Google sheet for sign-up (may include name, distance, pace, food if applicable)
